Victoria Day Weekend 2006: Trout bonanza

I bought a rubber net to help land the lakers more quickly. Rubber nets are better than conventional nylon nets because they remove much less of the protective slime from the fish (and Lake Trout are really slimey). Removing too much slime can leave a released fish more susceptible to disease.

I gave the 5-lb Laker (below) to Ken, a neighbor a few cottages down from us. He had mentioned that he hadn't heard of a trout being hauled up in years. I didn't notice that in the fishing regulations for our lake, that we are not allowed to take fish between 40cm and 55cm in length. I didn't measure the fish but the next time I take a fish, I will measure it beforehand. It is likely that the trout between 40cm and 55cm in length are of optimal spawning size.
